Beginning as an African American girl navigating the streets at 14, Flora acquired many survival skills that often resulted in incarceration, addiction, homelessness, and exploitation. Through many years of surviving life and facing the consequences throughout the legal system she has developed a strong character and integrity which results in extraordinary advocates, leaders, speakers, teachers, and friends. Flora currently holds a position as Breaking Free’s Manager of Communications and Programs.

Cynthia is a born advocate. After three decades of interaction with the criminal court system and substance use disorders, Cynthia was able to break free of addiction and is now solid in her purpose.  Her love for her community and her powerful voice led to her educational journey, ultimately earning a Master in Advocacy and Political Leadership (MAPL) from Metro State University. Cynthia is involved in direct community actions, as well as “Day on the Hill” events for voting rights, abolishing cash-bail, and pretrial detention led by MNSCC.  Cynthia has worked for nearly a decade with individuals impacted by the intersection of homelessness and incarceration, assisting returning community members to access safe, affordable housing, find employment with dignity, return to school, and expunge criminal histories. Advocating against the criminalization of addiction and the inherent racial injustice of the United States’ criminal court system, Cynthia now finds herself connecting justice-impacted patients with OUDs (Opioid Use Disorders) with healthcare and community resources in the role Community Health Worker at the S.T.A.R.T. Initiative Transitions Clinic at HCMC
